Balaji is Super King

In a tightly contested affair, the Tamil Nadu fast bowler, who hadn’t played a cricket match of significance in two years, came out with all guns blazing, as he wrote his name in the record books by taking the first ever IPL hat-trick. He achieved this feat in the last over of the game as he knocked over Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla and VRV Singh off successive deliveries, and thus set up a win for his team.

Earlier, asked to bat first on a pitch having some good bounce, Chennai Super Kings were reduced to 20 for 2, before captain MS Dhoni and Badrinath came out fighting with a half century each. Together they put on a 91-run stand as the target grew to a competitive 182 from 20 overs.

In reply, Kings XI started calmly, guided by a half century from Shaun Marsh, but lost their chase mid-way through the innings as they lost four wickets for just 20 runs. The next highest score was 40 runs by Pathan, and it looked that he might steal an improbable win, until Balaji’s last over antics. Chennai Super Kings beat Kings XI Punjab by 18 runs.
