Almost after 18 months of exile, Jagmohan Dalmiya is back with a motive as the newly elected president of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). 68 year old Dalmiya had earlier been accused of misappropriating PILCOM accounts for which he was banned and had to relinquish his post as CAB president in December 2006 after 13 years of power.
He outplayed Prasun Mukherjee to win with 71 votes out of the total 118 votes with a margin of 24 votes.
Although there has been no major reaction from the BCCI president Sharad Pawar or the BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah, a lot of action is expected in time to come. Dalmiya expects no change in the funding scenario from BCCI to CAB and said that if any such occurrence happens, he will take it up accordingly.
Sharad Pawar found no reason to comment or react to Dalmiya’s victory while Niranjan Shah said that there will be no resulting effect on BCCI.
Dalmiya was the first Asian chief of the ICC from 1997-2000, was the secretary of the BCCI from 1993-1996 and was later the BCCI president 2001-2005.
Under Dalmiya, the BCCI had changed gears to become the richest cricketing board in the world, also resulting in the widespread commercial viability of the sport for promoters and advertisers.
