India won their first match in the AFC cup football tournament at Hyderabad. They won 1-0 against Afghanistan after Climax Lawrence scored the goal in the 92nd minute.
Coach Bob Houghton defended the team’s performance saying that the 1-0 win was a fair result against an under-rated team in their first match of the AFC cup. Afghanistan are ranked 181 in the FIFA rankings.
“I don’t think that FIFA rankings reflect the strength of the Afghan team. They are a much better team than the rankings indicate, so it is no shame that we won by 1-0 margin,” he said at the post-match press conference.
India’s next rivals are defending champions Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, and they could be tougher opponents than the Afghans.
