India’s top-ranked women tennis player Sania Mirza retired from the first round of women’s singles event at the Beijing Olympics against Czech Iveta Benesova.
Sania was trailing 1-6, 1-2 when she retired from the match, as she aggravated an injury from the last year. The Czech holds a 3-0 record in her previous three meetings and now the record has gone up to 4-0.
Sania has been battling with injuries of late. She has missed much of this season with a wrist injury on which she needed surgery and ever since, has not recovered her full strength to be able to return to prime match fitness.
The pull-out also put Sania’s participation for the doubles event in doubt. She was to be teamed up with India’s No.2 player Sunitha Rao in the doubles, though no official announcement has been made yet.
