India’s cricket coach Gary Kirsten will join the team before the start of the ODI series on August 18.
He had gone home to his ailing mother who succumbed to cancer after a long sickness battle.
“Though Gary Kirsten was not in the Indian dressing room during the third Test, he was constantly in touch with Indian team management during the game. He was constantly messaging on the mobile phone from South Africa and was getting the feedback from the support staff almost everyday. He has decided to join the team in Sri Lanka before the start of the One-Day series on August 18,” a Board of Control for Cricket in India said.
“Unfortunately for him it was some sort of a double blow. He lost his mother before the start of the game after rushing back home from Sri Lanka and then had to hear about his team’s 2-1 series defeat,” the source added.
