Indian hopes of a first boxing medal at the Olympics were battered as boxer Jitender Kumar lost to Russian Georgy Balakshin in the men’s 51 kg flyweight quarter-finals in Beijing.
Balakshin defeated Jitender 15-11 in a one-sided contest as the Indian didn’t pose much threat against his mighty opponent.
Earlier on Saturday, Jitender swamped his Uzbek counterpart Tulashboy Doniyorov 13-6 to make it to the quarter-final of the 51kg event.
This is the first Olympics experience for Jitender and his performance here only bodes well for the future.
