Sri Lanka chose to bat first after winning the toss against India in the 5th ODI at the Premdasa Stadium in Colombo.
However, their progress came to nought as the Indian bowlers kept a tight leash on things. Jayasuriya departed early to a delivery from Zaheer Khan but then Warnapurna and Udawatte tried to stabilize things as they slowly went about building a partnership. The duo put up 77 runs in 16 overs before they fell to Pathan in quick succession.
Kumar Sangakkara failed yet again as RP Singh accounted for him while Pragyan Ojha bowled three consecutive maiden overs to tie knots around the Sri Lankan batsmen. He also took the all important wicket of Mahela Jayawardene.
At the end of 32 overs, Sri Lanka were tottering at 113 for 5, with Kapugadera and Jehan Mubarak trying desperately to get some runs on the board.
