Sri Lanka won a comfortable win in the 5th match against India at the Premdasa Stadium in Colombo, thus gaining a pride saving victory. They still lost the series though 3-2, but it was a massive win by 112 runs in a rain affected match.
Sri Lanka won the toss for the first time in the tournament and decided to have a bat. They didn’t have the best of starts as Jayasuriya was out for just one. The Indian bowlers bowled a tight line and the Lankans got out too cheaply trying to push through the score and at one stage were 6 down for 133. However a 94 run partnership between Jehan Mubarak and Thilan Thushara saved them from embarrasment and gave them a target of 227 to defend especially since Vaas and Murali were rested.
India again started cautiously and were 45 for 2 at one stage. But they soon lost their way and the were reduced to 4 for 76 when rain interrupted the proceedings. After six overs were lost, the Indians were set a revised target of 216. But then on Mendis came on to bowl and took 4 for 10 as India were all out for 103.
Kulasekara was awarded the man of the match for another 4 wicket haul and Indian captain MS Dhoni was awarded the man of the series.
