Umpire Review System trial to be extended

Following the immense success of the umpire decision review system used on a trial basis in the recent India-Sri Lanka series in July-August this year, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is now planning to extend it to other Test series too.

“That was a very positive piece of work we attended to at the (ICC) Chief Executive’s Committee (CEC) meeting,” ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said.

Under the new system, a batsman or the captain of the fielding side can ask for a review of an umpire’s decision. Each side is allowed three such reviews an innings.

“There were lots of reports about the positive outcome of that trial system. And, in fact, what the chief executive committee has recommended is to extend that trial so that we could get it in all the series coming up until the cricket committee meets sometime in May at which point they will make decide on the future of the system,” Lorgat said.

“My recollection (from the CEC meeting) is that it would involve all of the Test-playing nations and it may well involve all of the umpires and match referees as far as possible,” he added.
