A life-ban ban revoked on Sri Lanka’s rebel cricketers for joining the Indian Cricket League (ICL) may be re-imposed on them, according to sports minister Gamini Lokuge.
Speaking from Colombo in spite of being ill, he said, “I don’t want our board to be against the BCCI and the ICC. I have invited the board members to convince me about their decision on revoking ban. The decision by the interim committee was not taken with my consent and I am entitiled to re-impose the ban.”
Sri Lanka Cricket chief Arjuna Ranatunga, currently in London, refused to comment but is likely to attend the meeting after returning to Sri Lanka on Tuesday, it is learnt. An election for Sri Lanka Cricket is on the cards now. “I want to hold the elections as the interim committee can’t be run like this but not finding before suitable dates,” the minister added.
There are some whispers in Sri Lanka that chairman Ranatunga favoured Marvan Atapattu and other ICL players because of their close relations with the former Sri Lankan captain.
