Rest of India threw a surprise at the toss on the opening day of the Irani trophy as Rahul Dravid came out to bat with Wasim Jaffer as Anil Kumble won the toss and elected to bat first. The pitch is brown and looks set to become a dustbowl towards the end of the match.
Jaffer and Dravid started cautiously as the Delhi seamers held their line and length early on, but the lpitch was highly unlikely a Baroda track, not even the bounce was true. The duo batted freely and steadily to put on 77 for the first wicket. Jaffer contributed 50 of those and then threw away his wicket playing a lose shot after reaching the milestone.
Badrinath came ahead of Mohd. Kaif at number three and went about playing himself in as Rest of India took lunch at 105 for 1 with Dravid not out on 42.
