Former chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar lauded the century scored by Sourav Ganguly at Mohali against the Australians on Saturday and said the southpaw’s decision to retire was a personal one.
When asked if the century proved that the former India skipper had more cricket left in him, Vengsarkar said, “His retirement is up to him and is a personal decision. However, the century today was excellent and he has played very well.”
Vengsarkar, who was speaking on the sidelines of a function here, also denied there being any rift between him and the batsman over an alleged interview in which Ganguly had hit out at the selection committee headed by Vengsarkar for omitting him from the Irani Trophy.
“He has denied saying anything like that and it is a closed chapter,” he said.
Vengsarkar praised Sachin Tendulkar for his record breaking feat and said the cricketer had managed to retain the enthusiasm with which he had entered the sport.
“The enthusiasm he had then is still there. I think there are a couple of years more of cricket in him and he has done very well so far,” he said, adding that he had wished the master batsman on achieving the record.
