Chairman of the selection committee, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, said on Friday he is happy that Amit Mishra has justified the selectors’ faith in him by claiming five wickets in his debut Test.
“When we selected him, a lot of questions were raised. But he has proved us right. He has a big heart and is not afraid to flight the ball,” said Srikkanth. “I feel spinners mature with age and he has got the break at right time. Experience at the domestic level always helps and he has loads of it.”
Srikkanth said Central Zone selector Narendra Hirwani being a leg-spinner himself also helped Amit, who used Hirwani’s tips to great effect. “I don’t think his performance will affect team selection, as cricket isn’t about individuals. That players are fighting for place in the first eleven augurs well for Indian cricket. All players have contributed to the team’s cause in this Test and that’s the way cricket should be played,” Srikkanth added.
