Defending champions Hyderabad Heroes made their transition from home turf to the patchy greens of the Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Gurgaon in style, as Abdul Razzaq’s hurricane 66 not out set up a crushing nine-wicket win over Chandigarh Lions on Sunday.
Razzaq creamed two sixes and seven fours in his 61-ball knock, and added 123 runs for the opening stand with Jimmy Maher (48 not out) as Hyderabad chased down their target with ease, after Chandigarh managed to put up 141-6 after electing to bat.
Razzaq and Maher set up a clinical run chase; the batsmen picking their bowlers after seeing off Andrew Hall and Daryl Tuffey’s initial burst rather cautiously. Spinners Amit Uniyal and Dinesh Mongia were given a severe treatment, as the Heroes cantered home with 10 balls to spare.
The Chris Cairns-led Lions began their innings solidly, with openers Sarabjit Singh and Lou Vincent putting on 39 for the first wicket, but none of the batsmen managed to convert their starts into bigger scores, owing to tight middle overs bowled by Hyderabad’s slow bowlers, led by Inder Sekhar Reddy who went for just 15 runs off his four overs with two wickets.
