India reached a position of strength after the first thirty overs with the score reading 185 for 2 as England lost the toss and were made to field in the first ODI at Rajkot.

Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir started in whirlwind fashion and it seemed as they were still batting in the Australia series. The dashing duo brought up their fifty in just ten overs and crossed the hundred mark in the 17th over. Gambhir was out for 51 off Patel but Sehwag looked set for a hundred as he crossed the 80 run mark. He was eventually out for 85 off just 73 deliveries, again caught of Samit Patel.

After 34 overs, India were 216 for 2, with Raina batting on 35 and Yuvraj batting on 30.
