An unbeaten half-century from Subramaniam Badrinath guided the Chennai Super Kings to their second Indian Premier League win over reigning champions the Rajasthan Royals, thus completing the double this season.
Badrinath smashed 59 not out in 41 balls as the Super Kings closed on 141 for three in 18.2 overs after the Royals had been restricted to 140 for seven. The Royals, missing bowlers Kamran Khan and Amit Singh, and hurt by the blow of an injury to all-rounder Shane Watson, failed to fire after winning the toss and chossing to bat.
Muttiah Muralitharan and Shadeb Jakati picked up two wickets apiece as Graeme Smith top scored with an insufficient 30. Matthew Hayden continued his dream run with the bat, getting the Super Kings off to another flyer with 48 in 44 before he was stumped off the bowling of his compatriot Shane Warne, but by then the damage was almost done.
Murali Vijay Krishna (10) and Suresh Raina (13) fell cheaply but Badrinath held the innings together, hitting nine fours and a six with Jacob Oram unbeaten on one at the close.
Chennai Super Kings now have 13 points from ten games and are in 2nd position, while Rajasthan Royals have 11 points from ten games and are in 3rd position.
