English county side Sussex announced on Thursday they’d signed 20-year-old India leg-spinner Piyush Chawla on a short-term contract.
Chawla, who has played two Tests matches and 21 one-day internationals as well as appearing in the last two seasons of the IPL, was due to make his Sussex debut on Thursday against Worcestershire at New Road.
Chawla will be with Sussex until at least the end of the month when Yasir Arafat is due to return after the Twenty20 World Cup though he may be required for a potential Pakistan tour of Sri Lanka in July and August.
Former Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed, now an England bowling coach, was a key member of the Sussex side that won the County Championship in 2003, 2006 and 2007.
And Mark Robinson, professional cricket manager at Sussex, said: “We’ve been looking for a bowler who can potentially change the course of a game and we’re sure Piyush will fit the bill. Leg-spinners have proven success not only at our club, but in county cricket across the board. We’re looking forward to him joining us.”
