A thunderstorm and persistent heavy rain forced the ICC Champions Trophy Group A match between Australia and India to be abandoned, the no result confirming Pakistan’s passage into the quarter-finals.

Half-centuries from Mike Hussey (67), Ricky Ponting (65) and Tim Paine (56) all scored half-centuries as Australia were gearing up for a big push having won the toss when the rain arrived in the 43rd over. Shane Watson (0) departed early, caught by Harbhajan Singh off Ashish Nehra.

India will be out of the tournament unless they beat the West Indies convincingly in their final game and Pakistan beat Australia – both games take place on Wednesday and net run-rate could well come into play to decide who progresses along with Pakistan.
