India Red pulled off a seven-wicket win over India Blue to win the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy in Nagpur on a day when 13 wickets fell for just 191 runs.
India Blue were shot out for just 84, captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s 23 the top score, and India Red then reached 85 for three in the 21st over of their reply to close out the win.
Munaf Patel returned career-best figures of four for 21 as the Blue’s batting was ripped apart, but the first important blows were struck by Sudeep Tyagi when he had Naman Ojha (0) and Harbhajan Singh (8) bowled and Suresh Kumar trapped in front for a duck.
From 19 for three, India Blue partially recovered, reaching 49 before wickets began to tumble again as Dhoni added 30 runs with Wasim Jaffer, who made 11.
The only other batsman to reach double figures was Jalaj Saxena, who was left unbeaten on 19 as Patel tore through the tail. Tyagi finished with three for 20 and Ishant Sharma two for 26.
In reply, India Red raced to 40 before losing Murali Vijay Krishna (12) and Sunny Sohal (0) in one Harbhajan over but 38 from Shikhar Dhawan and an unbeaten 28 from Harshad Khadiwale steered them home.
