The Kings XI Punjab pulled off a second successive victory batting second in the Indian Premier League, hurting the Delhi Daredevil’s chances of reaching the semi-finals with a polished seven-wicket win.
After bowling Delhi out for 111, the lowest IPL score in Delhi, they reached 112 for three with eight balls to spare. Irfan Pathan (3-24) and Piyush Chawla (2-16) led the way with the ball, Pathan striking to dismiss Virender Sehwag for a golden duck, Dinesh Karthik for 17 and Ashish Nehra for one. David Warner (6) ran his captain Gautam Gambhir, who looked in good touch making 26 in 12 balls, and then was himself run out after he was sent back by Paul Collingwood. Collingwood made just four before he was trapped inf ront by leg-spinner Chawla, who later bowled Daniel Vettori for two as the pitch proved receptive to spin.
Yuvraj Singh’s slow left-armers accounted for Rajat Bhatia, who was caught by Reetinder Sodhi and Ramesh Powar bowled an excellent spell opening the bowling, conceding 25 runs from his four overs before wickets began to tumble.
In reply, the Kings XI batsmen were assured, Mahala Jayawardene strokign 38 in 35 balls and adding 41 for the first wicket with Pathan, promoted to open the batting alongside the former Sri Lankan captain. Pathan made 12 in 17 balls before he was caught by Bhatia as leg-spinner Amit Mishra struck. Jayawardene was the next man to fall when he was caught by Nehra as he failed to clear the ropes when he took on Collingwood’s medium pace and Collingwood picked up his second wicket when he bowled Kumar Sangakkara with the Kigns XI two runs short of victory.
Yuvraj Singh thumped two fours and a six to be unbeaten on 21 when Adrian Barath (2) scampered through for the winning run. Collingwood finished with figures of two for 19 as he and Mishra (1-15) were the only bowlers to complete their four overs.
