Mahela Jayawardene narrowly missed out on a second consecutive century as Sri Lanka thrashed the West Indies by 57 runs to get their ICC World Twenty20 Super Eight Group F campaign off to a winning start in Barbados.
Jayawardene was left stranded on 98 not out from 56 balls as Sri Lanka posted 195 for three, the highest score of the tournament with captain Kumar Sangakkara making 68 and the West Indies were then restricted to 138 for eight in reply.
Jayawardene lost opening partner Sanath Jayasuriya (6) early on when he was caught by Jerome Taylor off the returning Kemar Roach but he then added 166 for the second wicket with Sangakkara.
Jayawardene stroked nine fours and four sixes and Sangakkara hit five fours and three sixes in his 49-ball innings to take the game away from the West Indians and although Roach struck again to dismiss Chamara Kapugedera, bowled for six from the penultimate ball of the match, which prevented Jayawardene getting back on strike for the final ball, and Dwayne Bravo had Sangakkara caught by Kieron Pollard, the West Indians produced a below-par display in the field.
